The events are organized by the Department of Educational Studies of the Primorska University, in order to promote the artistic and cultural production and the qualified professions, with the purpose of developing new programs of artistic study.

The third edition of Spekula 2021 has the subheading PRAŠNE POVRŠINE – Umetnost kot misel o naravi (DUSTY SURFACES – Art as an idea on nature), encloses the vision on the present guidelines of cultural and artistic phenomena, the role of artworks in relation to nature, its preservation, and its cherishing.

Nature, with its crucial part in spreading social values and integrating specific changes in the social context, considering the continuous growth of the levels of consumption, influences art, which is beginning to focus on social opinions regarding ecology and the conservation of the environment.

Following such an approach of awareness, revitalization and behavioural changes, the considerations and the values concerning nature start to get noticed in the alteration of codes involving the artistic creations and the socio-cultural contexts of nature preservation.

Despite the epochal changes in common values and personal identity, the gaze of the artist projects its attitude and his change of opinion through his artistic alphabet, which, in its turn, results in more responsible processings of social and sociological values regarding the conservation of nature.

DUSTY SURFACES – Art as an idea on nature, translates into an artistic phenomenon that aims at a broader approval, wishing in a better and more balanced global treatment of nature, focused on the need of finding new values about image.

The images we perceive in the contemporary artistic expression nourish both social values and personal growth. To this end, the third edition of Spekula makes an effort to introduce a wider point of perspective, and to implement new artistic codes in a sustainable way. We try to convey the idea of preserving nature in the social and cultural context, revitalizing it and spreading the awareness of how crucial the role of art is in the local community and the whole region. Socially engaged art tends to emerge with everchanging artistic messages and codes.

A portion of the exhibition has the title DIAPAZON POGLEDA (THE REACH OF THE GAZE) and is located at the Meduza Gallery of Koper, showing the works of Nina Mršnik, Lara Marconi and Eda Birsa. The authors are active in contemporary art production and present to us three different approaches, which nevertheless form a

homogeneous totality. The paintings and images of Eda Birsa testify the importance of the spiritual transfer; Lara Marconi embeds the translation of recurring and synthetic images into her work, transforming the bidimensional narration of fairy-tale motifs into complex entities; Nina Mršnik broadens the pictorial space inviting the spectator to an active form of participation, reinterpreting new experiences through spatial installations and the introduction of new aesthetic values.

The Spekula Festival is accompanied by talks with the authors, round tables, presentations and discussions involving the participation of professionals working in and outside of the visual art world.

The artistic director of the event is the associate professor dr. Tilen Žbona, working at the Department of Educational Studies of the Primorska University.
