The traditional Ex-tempore Piran, which takes place every year towards the end of summer, also symbolically heralds the start of the autumn program in the Piran Coastal Galleries.
Loža Gallery, Koper
The personal exhibition of paintings by the Maribor artist Borut Popenko titled Openings, which will be opened on September 27, 2024, is an exchange exhibition for this year’s January presentation of the works of the Slovene Littoral artist Lara Marconi Jeranko in the premises of the Maribor Art Gallery (UGM). Since the beginning, Popenko has been interested in the basic elements of painting that arise from empty space, from the materiality of the painting medium to the formation of the painting field. In his exploration of colors and shapes, proportions, compositions, volumes and harmonies, he refers to the abstract painting tradition, from abstract expressionism, color field painting, geometric abstraction to monochrome painting and minimalism. Among his role models, he cites giants of abstract art such as Mark Rothko, Josef Albers, Morris Louis, Ellsworth Kelly, and contemporaries Anish Kapoor, Peter Halley and Gerwald Rockenschaub.

Room: Openly dialogues between artists and critics
As part of the exhibition Ex-tempore 10, award-winning works from the OGP’s collections 2014-2024, which accompanies this year’s ex-tempore, we will organize informal conversations about contemporary visual art with experts and artists. Meetings between various actors working in the art field aim to bring contemporary art closer to a wider audience, especially from the point of view of creators and art connoisseurs. The talks will take place in the Piran City Gallery on Saturday, October 19 and Saturday, November 9, from 10:00 to 12:00.
At the first meeting, Tina Fortič Jakopič, art historian and curator of the art collection at the Museum of Recent and Contemporary History of Slovenia, and Ulla Žibert, visual artist and recipient of the ex-tempore 2017 grand prize, will be with us.
At the second meeting we will hear Miran Mohar, painter, graphic designer, scenographer, member of the Irwin group and co-founder of the collective Neue Slowenische Kunst, the theater of the Scipinon Nasice sisters and the design group Novi kolektivizem, and Tina Konec, visual artist and winner of the 2018 Ex-tempore.
Pedagogical program
In conjunction with the EX-TEMPORE 10, prize-winning works from the Piran Coastal Galleries’ 2014–2024 collection exhibition, we will organize pedagogical workshops for school groups and young individuals. While viewing and closely observing the prize-winning works from the collection of the Piran Coastal Galleries, youngsters will be able to interpret and recreate the exhibited painting of their choice in their own way. The workshops, which will be organized by the curator and pedagogue Ana Papež, will take place in the Piran Civic Gallery; they will be open to the public on Friday, October 4, and Friday, November 15, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and for organized groups in the morning, by prior agreement (ana.papez@obalne-galerije.si).
On the ground floor of the Piran Civic Gallery, young art enthusiasts are welcomed by Muza Meduza, a wall-mounted coloring book with soap bubbles in which they can draw or write their thoughts or impressions from the exhibition.
