EX TEMPORE 10, highlights the prize-winning artworks of the last ten years – Grand Prix and Young Authors Prize – which the Piran Coastal Galleries keep in their collections. The prize-winning artworks of this year’s edition are also included in the selection. The artistic material on display, which follows a chronological order, is complemented by a rich documentary apparatus with written justifications of the international juries of art experts. The diverse composition of the individual members of the jury (artists, curators, art historians, well-known figures from the world of visual arts) guarantees a high level of professional discourse in the evaluation and final selection.

Classical painting is not the most popular medium in the Ex-tempore Piran art manifestation, since other non-traditional techniques are also well represented among the winning artworks of the last decade, such as embroidery and collage (bags with sugar, matches…). When preparing the selection of artworks, it was also revealed that most of the prize-winning artists were female artists. They received a total of fifteen awards, seven for the Grand Prix and eight for the Young Authors Prize. Only two male artists have been among the young winners in the last ten years. The number of prize winners from Slovenia is quite high (14), given that only five winners of both prizes were from abroad.

Last year (2023), the newly introduced increase in the sum of money awarded to the recipient of the main prize had a positive resonance. This gesture was intended to be an additional incentive for artists and collectors, given that an increase in prize money can be expected to increase quality, contribute to a more varied selection of works and increase the number of participants. The latter probably contributed to the fact that last year we recorded the highest number of students from academies and other art institutions among the participants in the last ten years.

The names of this year’s winners will be added to the list of participants of the group exhibition later.

As part of the exhibition EX-TEMPORE 10, Prize-Winning Artworks From the Piran Coastal Galleries’ Collections 2014–2024, the Piran Civic Gallery will also host a rich accompanying programme for all target groups, which will be dedicated to the experiences associated with the Ex-tempore Piran in the last decade and the understanding of the painting medium in the present day. We will communicate more about the accompanying program in September.
