The interest expressed by the general public in the art content offered by the Piran Coastal Galleries in this late autumn and winter season in the Piran and Koper exhibition centers supported our decision to extend the viewing time of some exhibitions. Important international events are also being prepared, the completion of the renovation of the Meduza Gallery in Koper is near, and the public is offered selected moments for socializing and open discussion.

The solo exhibition of the Maribor artist Borut Popenko in the Loža Gallery in Koper, which will be open until Sunday, 8 December 2024, is one of those top exhibitions on view  that experts, students of art academies, as well as aficionados of the modern painting medium, should not miss. Borut Popenko is an established creator of the middle generation of Slovenian artists, who “with his painting practice puts into consideration the tense relationship between picture-object and picture-image and investigates how to fold the canvas, how to unfold the layers of the canvas into a fan, how to open the canvas like a door.” (J. OPENINGS AND EVENTS IN DECEMBER

At the end of the year, on Friday, 20 December 2024, Gani Llalloshi’s personal exhibition promises to be another one of this artist’s outstanding painting revelations in the Piran Civic Gallery. The Priština-born artist, who chose Piran as his living and creative habitat, is considered an experienced listener of our time. He draws the current, political, and above all social issues that he deals with in his works from his immediate environment, and he often likes to return to his native country of Kosovo. In the Loža Gallery in Koper, we are preparing a thematic display of MISCELLANEA, Stories and Works of Art From the Depots of the Piran Coastal Galleries. The exhibition aims to direct attention to that part of the galleries’ activity, which is usually not at the forefront of the general public’s interest, but represents the basic form of organization of objects in a museum, i.e. the collection. In the case of a gallery institution, it concerns art collections and how the works stored in them were obtained. Dr. Majda Božeglav Japelj, the curator of the exhibition, called the selection of over twenty works from different art collections MISCELLANEA, which in old Latin means a mixture of heterogeneous, unrelated things.

The rare opportunity to view the art heritage kept in depots, which in a way reveals the past programmatic and collecting policy of the Piran Coastal Galleries, the method of acquisition, preservation and exhibition, aims to establish an active dialogue with the public and the professional sphere.  Undoubtedly, it is precisely the latter that is called upon to probe even more capillaryly the developments of contemporary artistic creativity in the border area of Slovenian Istria in the future. The longer exhibition period will partially compensate for the lack of a permanent installation and enable a series of accompanying events for different target audiences.
