The first month of spring brings quite a few original events to the Piran Coastal Galleries. Among these, the beginning of the program of public meetings and an important international group exhibition stand out. These events will be accompanied with a rich pedagogical and andragogical program. This year marks ten years since the renovation of the Piran City Gallery, so on this occasion we reviewed the contents of the depots of our institution and completely refreshed the wall paint of our central exhibition space in Piran.
Last year’s GALLERIES FROM OUTSIDE initiative will continue this spring. This year, when the galleries are finally open, we upgraded the project with a live program in the form of “artist’s talks”, meetings and discussions on the topic of visual art in the coastal region of Slovenia and the role and mission of contemporary art institutions in the 21st century. We will invite Slovenian and foreign guests who stand out with their artistic, research and pedagogical achievements in various spheres of visual art. The guest of the first meeting, which will take place on Saturday, 19 March 2022 at 11.30 AM, at the Piran City Gallery, will be PRIMOŽ BIZJAK, an established photographer from the coastal region. After graduating from the Venetian Academy of Fine Arts in 2005, the artist lived in Italy, Spain and Germany. He currently lives and works in Madrid. He is interested in borders, abandoned spaces and spaces marked by the past, as well as spaces that have lost their original purpose or are in the process of transformation. He is also interested in human interventions in the environment and the functioning of nature and the intertwining of past and present. More on the link….
The exhibition PANORAMA. SELECTION FROM THE ART FUND OF THE PIRAN COASTAL GALLERIES will be opened on Friday, March 25, 2022 at 6 PM, at the Piran City Gallery. With it we would like to draw attention to the importance of the artistic heritage that we keep in our depots. These works of art are an extremely valuable source for raising awareness among the general public about the universal importance of art and its role in understanding the world and humanity. The exhibition will feature selected works by renowned Slovenian and foreign artists: Günter Brus, Avgust Černigoj, Christo & Jeanne-Claude, IRWIN, Dušan Kirbiš, Metka Krašovec, Janez Lenassi, Emil Memon, Hermann Nitsch, Mimmo Paladino, John Phillips, Anne & Patrick Poirier and Robert Watts. The selection of these exquisite works will be on display until the end of May. It originates from the most representative collections of the Piran Coastal Galleries: Collection of Coastal Artists, Collection of Contemporary Slovenian Art After 1976, International Collection Avant-Garde Laboratory Francesco Conz, Collection of International Painting Ex-tempore Piran, Photographic Collection and Medusa Collection. In addition to high-quality works of art, the exhibition also highlights the importance of the collections themselves and the historical framework of their creation, and briefly describes how the objects exhibited were obtained by the gallery fund. The PANORAMA exhibition will also be accompanied by a diverse pedagogical and andragogical program. As part of the exhibition, special guided tours will be organized with PCG curators, who will present to the public some less known curiosities and details from the diverse history of the Piran Coastal Galleries about works and artists and the creation of PCG’s various collections.
For children of different ages of primary and secondary schools, workshops GLUE, WRAP, SPRAY! will be organized at the Piran City Gallery. These will take place in the entrance hall of the gallery, which will be converted into a creative laboratory, available for independent creative process for individual visitors or groups of visitors. During the workshops, children and students will be creating works using modern techniques such as collage, wrapping objects and spraying. The point of reference for the workshops are selected works from the PCg’s collections: Avgust Černigoj’s Beach (1966), Christo’s Wrapped Reichstag (1971-1995) and other works. These are works in art techniques specific to the art of the second half of the 20th century. Among the pioneers of these then revolutionary techniques are Christo and Jeanne Claude. With their specific technique of “wrapping”, they developed megalomaniac projects and expanded the field of the so-called Land art. The laboratory and workshops will thus combine an understanding of art and its historical background.
Due to the great response, the duration of the solo exhibition of the Koper-born artist EMIL MEMON entitled SAINTLY BODY in the Loža Gallery in Koper has been extended to 31 May 2022. The exhibition draws in many visitors of different generations, therefore on Tuesday, 22 March 2022, a guided tour of the exhibition with the author Emil Memon and external curator dr. Tilen Žbona will be organized for a group of students from Slovenia. More info here…
Let us also draw attention to the thematic exhibition ANGELS OR BEASTS that is on view at the Herman Pečarič Gallery in Piran until 10 April 2022 and which we prepared as part of the international project MARAVEE. In March, a special guided tour will be organized for GEPŠ high school students. More about the project…
Until 18 March 2022, the Medusa Gallery in Koper will host the exhibition THE COLOR HIDDEN BY WINTER, which is part of the 17th implementation of the project THIS TIME, THE STAGE TAKES… FRAGRANT GREEN.
Finally, we would like to announce that as part of the TARTINI 330 program, dedicated to the 330th anniversary of the birth of Giuseppe Tartini, we will prepare a TARTINI IN MY EYES workshop in the spring. Children and students will create portraits of the great violinist and composer born in Piran in a preferred art technique (graphics, drawing, painting, collage…). Their creations will be subsequently presented to the public in the form of a pedagogical exhibition at the Herman Pečarič Gallery in Piran.
We are looking forward to upcoming events and to your visit!
