René Coutelle was born in 1927 in Sarthe. As a self-taught man, he continued the stonemasonry heritage of the area in which he lived. With an innate intuition, he approached the choice of hard sculptural materials such as marble, onyx, serpentine and granite, but also softer ones such as oak, walnut and rosewood. His role models were the great sculptors of the 20th century (Brancusi and Zadkin, etc.). Since 1957 he has participated in various sculpture exhibitions, mainly in France. He died in 2012 in Paris.

In a secluded position on a terraced slope, hidden from prying eyes in the shelter of trees, the lovely couple René Coutelle was given the ideal position. The French artist knew how to extract the primitive and natural beauty of Istrian stone from the sculptural material. We feel it in the processing of plastic volume, which describes the passionate intertwining of the male and female body, but also in the coarse-grained structure of the surface. There doesn’t seem to be a piece of stony skin that wouldn’t be disturbed by the tension of this intoxicating and eternally lasting moment of theirs.
