HYBRID GARDENS
Spatial installation – Herman Pečarič Gallery Piran, 14.04 ─ 5.06.2023
Exhibition opening: Friday, 14. 4. 2023, at 6 p.m.
Curated by: Tatjana Sirk
Project in collaboration with the University of Rijeka, Academy of Applied Arts
Since it opened, the Herman Pečarič Gallery has several times been the venue for ceramics exhibitions with diverse contents. Especially important were those connected to the International Ceramics Ex-Tempore (2000─2015). After a longer break, when the manifestation was symbolically completed with the exhibition of ceramics from the collections of the Piran Coastal Galleries in 2016, the exhibition grounds are once again hosting a spatial installation of this popular art genre.
The Hybrid Gardens installation is a project work of the 1st year students who opted for the Ceramics course within their undergraduate studies of Applied Arts, Fine Arts Education, and Visual Communication and Graphic Design. This is a best practice example of association and connecting of students and mentors for the common design of a concept and team work, which quickly turned out to be a successful way of learning and teaching knowledge and skills. The ecological orientation of the project with the use of recycled clay, which is collected and separated after unsuccessful drying and burning processes, should be highlighted. At the same time, with their common work at the Academy students feel socially useful, since the final pieces are extremely useful for decorating interiors. The premises of larger public spaces, such as hospitals or schools, thus become friendlier and more attractive.
Hybrid Gardens is a work in progress that constantly changes and never truly ends. It is composed of handmade unique pieces or multiples made with moulds or 3D ceramic prints. Their effect is independent but they achieve an even greater effect combined in compositions that are assembled and adapted to a particular space according to the modular principle. Basic elements are made of clay, of organic or geometric forms, in natural clay hues, with differently processed surface structure (relief, smooth, unglazed, glazed, etc.), hollow and with openings inhabited by the living plant world. Regardless of the making and form, it is the combination of the dead material with the living organisms that gives the end creations a special expressive power and poeticity. Ceramic forms in interaction with the plant world make new microworlds of perfect harmony and coexistence. At the group installation, a special dialogue between different individual art poetics is automatically established. With each new combination and in every new space the installation also offers a new aesthetic experience, while an attentive spectator can detect and feel so much more in the hanging hybrid gardens.
