WHEN A LINE APPEARS (at the Exhibition with the Painter) –
Workshops and Final Exhibition |

Herman Pečarič Gallery Piran, April 1 – May 18, 2025

Donkeys, 1956, ink / paper

As part of the creative project When a line appears (At the Exhibition with the Painter), which will include workshops and a final exhibition, participants of all ages will explore the diverse motifs of Piran painter Herman Pečarič. Pečarič lived and worked in Piran for many years. He loved the Istrian landscape and coastal towns, which is why he donated more than a hundred paintings, prints, and drawings to Piran. These works are now preserved in the gallery that bears his name. His preferred drawing tools included pencil, ink, charcoal, and chalk.

With a lively line-soft, curved, thin, straight-he skilfully emphasized its character and captured the essence of an image. We will immerse ourselves in his world, landscapes, city streets, squares, portraits, animals, and moments from everyday life. Using drawing tools, we will attempt to create our own images and discover how much can be expressed through simple lines.

The workshops will take place at the Herman Pečarič Gallery from April 1 to May 18, 2025 and will conclude with an exhibition. The workshop dates will be announced shortly. For more information, please contact ana.papez@obalne-galerije.si.

The project includes some of Herman Pečarič's popular motifs in various drawing techniques. In addition to the artist's works, empty frames will be hung on the wall, into which selected artworks created by participants in the workshops will be placed. The exhibition's appearance will constantly change depending on the number of workshops held, which is why it carries the subtitle In the exhibition with the painter.

The workshop is divided into two parts. In the first part, participants will be invited to listen to PCG curator-educator Ana Papež, with whom they will learn about gallery institutions, the life and work of the artist, and his preferred drawing techniques. Special attention will be given to exploring the themes that inspired Pečarič.

Afterward, the participants will select two representatives from among themselves—curators—who will be responsible for choosing the artworks created in the later stages of the project. A curator is a professional working in museums and galleries, responsible for the care of artworks in storage as well as for organizing temporary and permanent exhibitions.

After reviewing the created artworks, the two curators will independently select the best ones and, with the assistance of the curator-educator, appropriately place them in the empty frames on the wall. Presenting and explaining their selection to the audience will be optional but encouraged.

We invite you to confidently take part in this project, which, in addition to artistic creation, also provides insight into the professional role of curators in art institutions.
