The art world was shaken by the news that Koyo Kouoh, one of the leading figures of the global art scene, passed away at the age of 58. She was recently appointed as the first female African curator to serve as the artistic director of the Venice Biennale of Visual Arts in 2026.

Her remarkable professional journey was marked by a deep commitment to promoting contemporary art and building cultural bridges between the African continent and the rest of the world. She dedicated herself to building human-centered systems and institutions to support artists and producers worldwide, curating landmark international exhibitions, shaping contemporary art collections, organizing prominent international events and biennials, and authoring outstanding publications.

Already as a young curator, I had the opportunity to get to know Koyo Kouoh’s broad intellectual horizons and boundless creative energy through several collaborative projects. Over the years, our relationship evolved and profoundly influenced my professional work and life path. What began as a professional experience grew into a sincere and lasting friendship, enriched by the power of love.

Her sudden departure leaves a deep void in the world of contemporary art and in my personal life. Those of us who experienced her vision of a better and brighter future will carry it forward as a precious legacy for generations to come.

On my own behalf and on behalf of the Piran Coastal Galleries, I extend my heartfelt condolences to her family. We share our sympathy with the colleagues and all those who were touched by her intellect and unwavering courage.
