From 1977 until his retirement, he successfully directed, planned, and led the exhibition programme of the Piran Coastal Galleries, implementing his vision for the development of contemporary art. He contributed decisively to a new philosophical perspective on the visual arts. It was precisely thanks to him that the Piran Coastal Galleries became one of the leading contemporary art institutions in Slovenia.<\/p>\n<p>Within the framework of the galleries, he organized and curated more than 500 monographic, thematic, and group exhibitions, particularly study exhibitions of Slovenian and international artists. He conceived and established the gallery\u2019s fundamental collections, comprising outstanding works by Slovenian artists from the late 1970s onwards. In the 1980s, he developed and theorized the concept of the so-called \u201cnew image\u201d in Slovenian painting and sculpture, as well as in the broader Yugoslav context. After independence, he defined updated perspectives on contemporary Slovenian artistic production. Until the very end, he also collaborated with other important galleries in Slovenia.<\/p>\n<p>His publishing activity was equally significant: his bibliography in COBISS comprises 972 entries. He published nearly 40 poetry collections, for which he received numerous awards: the Pre\u0161eren Fund Award, the \u010ca\u0161a nesmrtnosti Award, the Jenko Award, and the Veronika Award.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, he received the Valvasor Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2024 the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Slovenian Association of Art Critics. On the occasion of the Valvasor Award, the citation stated:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThrough his original, independent, dedicated, interdisciplinary work, grounded in philosophical foundations and professional critical thought, Andrej Medved made an extraordinary contribution to the Slovenian and international gallery and museum sphere (\u2026). At home and abroad, he created new opportunities for young Slovenian and international artists, opening the doors of the contemporary public sphere to them. He is a person whose publicly expressed professional and personal stance carries significant weight.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Piran Coastal Galleries have opened books of condolence at the Loggia Gallery in Koper and at the Piran Civic Gallery.
