MORE ABOUT THE PROJECT

The positive impact of art on life

Music has been proven to have a positive effect on living organisms; we already know about the positive effects of music to calm people, plants and animals. In Montalcino, Italy, speakers are placed in vineyards and classical music is played, which has a beneficial effect on the growth of grapes. Similar stories are also emerging in the USA, France and elsewhere in the world. Music is not just a companion, but a companion on a journey that transforms wine into elegance and subtlety.

“Sound is all around us and it is hard to imagine living in complete silence. In this experiment, we are faced with the hypothesis that sound waves have a positive effect on living beings, in my case on micro-organisms, which, accompanied by music during alcoholic fermentation, biological decomposition and maturation, act and contribute to a better version of the wine," said Sara Pfeifer Milčinović, author of the project Tartini 330: Sound Experience by Sara. During her years of study, Sara came up with the idea of exposing wine to certain frequencies during alcoholic fermentation and analysing how the frequencies affect the growth of the yeasts present in the wine. The idea and the project were supported by the Vinakoper winery and the first experiments began.

In the historic terroir of the “Šantoma" hill, the Vinakoper winery harvested the grapes of the refosco grape variety and exposed them throughout the production process to the selected classical music of the virtuoso Giuseppe Tartini. “This refošk gives us its typical intense colour, intoxicating aromas of dark berries and an unmistakable taste in which we experience softness and juiciness. In a wine caressed by selected classical music throughout the entire production process, we can enjoy a harmony of aromas and flavours that take us to the playful and sun-drenched hills of Istria," said Boštjan Zidar, Vinakoper's Chief Oenologist.

The project, which has been two years in the making, is the result of a collaboration between the Piran Coastal Galleries, Vinakoper and the Municipality of Piran. “Imagine a journey through time and taste, when art and tradition come together in a special series of wines. This is the Tartini Sound Experience by Sara," began Mara Ambrožič Verderber, Director of the Coastal Galleries of Piran. “Sara Pfeifer Milčinović has combined the effects of sound on the action of yeasts during the alcoholic fermentation process in her scientific imagination. The wine was matured in a barrique oak barrel, but this was no ordinary maturation. It was exposed to the sounds of Tartini's music, which intertwined with the winemaking process. The music played throughout the process was the sonata Re maggiore, and we chose this sonata because of its name, as the refosco variety is known as the king of reds," said Mara Ambrožič Verderber on the occasion of the project.

The Municipality of Piran also supported the Tartini 330 project. “The idea that everyone who visits us, from high-profile guests to casual visitors, can find (and take away) everything that makes us unique and characteristic in one product seemed like a stroke of genius to us. Cultural heritage, art, enogastronomy, creativity and, above all, the message of music that connects are the treasures that the Municipality of Piran, with Tartini Re Maggiore, is giving to its partners and, at the same time, the beginning of the promotion of Istria as a unique destination" said Manuela Rojec, vice major of Municipality of Piran.

The pilot project is just the beginning

Tartini 330: Sound Experience by Sara is characterised by innovation and creativity, which are important values of constructive creation. The pilot project confirmed the potential for the development of music wine in the years to come, because the project carries a special charge that encourages socially and culturally responsible stakeholders to demonstrate through their actions that cooperation between culturists, innovators, business and local decision-makers brings added value. The series, which is produced annually in cooperation with the Coastal Galleries of Piran and Vinakoper, has been presented for several years under the renowned artistic slogan ART SERIES editions.
