Daniela Danica Tepeš: On the Other Side | 28.4. 2022 – 21.08. 2022 | Monfort Gallery Portorož |

Opening: Thursday, 28.4. 2022, at 7.00 pm

Daniela Danica Tepeš is a local, internationally renowned visual artist who graduated at the AVA – Academy of Visual Arts in Ljubljana. She has participated in numerous international exhibitions and projects in Europe, Asia and Oceania. Her artwork has been presented twice at the Venice Biennale, at the 58th edition in 2019 and at the 57th edition in 2017, both in the pavilion of the island nation of Kiribati located in Oceania. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kiribati and the National Museum and Cultural Center of Kiribati also chose her to represent the vanishing island nation of Kiribati in international projects and exhibitions that highlighted global climate change and related sea level rise.

The Oceania is also linked to an art project that addresses the global issue of extreme encroachment on nature, including open deep pits for phosphate extraction on Pacific islands.
The exhibition is designed as a reflection on human plundering of the natural environment. The installation with phosphate pits transforms the gallery space into a space of depletion and contamination and encourages self-reflection and reflection on human existence, its production of the so called dead landscapes, on the intertwining of everything with everything, and about human subsequent self-destruction. Her visual expression nurtures a multidisciplinary approach and draws her creative impulse from the implementation and integration of various artistic practices, the latest technologies and visual, audio, spatial, digital and other new media. In certain segments, they reach into the intersection of science and art. There, in an original, radical way, she draws attention to pertinent socio-environmental problems and encourages public controversy surrounding them.

A special folded poster leaflet will be published at the occasion of the exhibition, with a critical contribution by Jovita Pristovšek. It will be published by the ERGO SUM Institute, with the support of AVA-  Academy of Visual Arts in Ljubljana.
