This year, Piran Days of Architecture will celebrate its quarter century. This is a fairly long
period, even for architecture, let alone architects. PDA came into being at a time of critical
regionalism and later post-modernism, belief in high technology etc.
By the choice of lecturers, we succeeded in retaining distance to the periodical byways and
excesses of the profession. Authors such as Oriol Bohigas, Sverre Fehn, Juan Navarro Baldeweg
and Alvaro Siza and theoreticians and publicists of architecture such as Friedrich Achleitner,
Jacques Lucan and Francesco Dal Co helped us over the reefs of short-lived fashion.
A quarter of a century is a period in which three to four generations of architecture students
complete their education. In that time, therefore, three to four »generations« of architecture,
belief in it, first love, as well as doubt and at times resignation.
However, architecture, thank heavens, is more durable than we architects. A period of 25 years
is long enough for us to have learnt: if there's something wrong, it's us - not architecture.
The theme of this year's meeting is thus simply PDA - 25 years of architecture.
